The Housing Compliance Officer is responsible for ensuring that all mine houses, hostels, and residential facilities comply with health, safety, housing, and operational standards, in line with mining legislation, company policies, and community standards. The role protects employee wellbeing, reduces operational and legal risk, and ensures safe, habitable living conditions for mine employees and their families.
Job description

Housing & Infrastructure Compliance

  • Conduct regular inspections of mining houses, hostels, and residential units
  • Ensure compliance with:
    • Health & Safety standards
    • Fire safety and emergency readiness
    • Electrical, plumbing, and structural integrity
    • Occupancy and living condition standards
  • Identify non-compliance risks and issue corrective action plans

Health, Safety & Risk Management

  • Ensure housing facilities align with mine SHERQ standards
  • Support audits and inspections by internal auditors, DMR/DMRE, or third parties
  • Monitor contractor compliance during maintenance and housing upgrades
  • Escalate safety risks that may impact employee wellbeing or mine operations

Maintenance & Contractor Oversight

  • Coordinate and monitor housing maintenance and repairs
  • Ensure contractors comply with mine safety rules and housing standards
  • Verify completion and quality of remedial work
  • Track outstanding defects and close-out actions

Compliance Reporting & Records

  • Maintain accurate housing compliance records and inspection reports
  • Compile monthly and quarterly compliance reports for management
  • Track statutory and internal compliance requirements
  • Support mine audits, inspections, and management reviews

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Liaise with:
    • Mine employees and occupants
    • Facilities and engineering teams
    • Security, safety, and HR departments
    • External inspectors and service providers
  • Address housing complaints professionally and within agreed turnaround times

Minimum requirements

  • Grade 12
  • Diploma or Degree in Housing Management, Built Environment, Facilities Management
  • Valid South African Driver's License
  • Relevant experience in housing compliance, facilities, or inspections
