Introduction
Responsible for the calibration, repair and maintenance of control gear/instrumentation in the manufacturing process. Devices, select, sets up and operates electronic instrumentation and related electromechanical or electrohydraulic apparatus used for operational and environmental testing of mechanical, structural or electrical equipment and translates test data for engineering and operational staff. Selects, installs, calibrates and checks sensing, telemetering and recording instrumentation and circuitry and develops specifications for non-standard apparatus according to engineering data, characteristics of equipment under test and capabilities of procurable test apparatus. Overall ensures instrumentation availability, maintenance efficiency, cost effectiveness and enhanced production performance
Job description

1. Cost Efficiency and Financial Awareness

  • Demonstrates strong budget and cost awareness.
  • Proactively identifies process inefficiencies and recommends/implements cost-saving initiatives within the engineering function (e.g., automation opportunities).
  • Escalates potential cost-related risks to avoid financial impact.
  • Adheres to standard receiving procedures to mitigate the risk of financial loss.

2. Instrumentation Maintenance and Repair

  • Executes preventative maintenance plans and shutdown schedules aligned with operational objectives.
  • Implements maintenance processes that:
    • Identify sub-standard performance and systems,
    • Promote role clarity and accountability,
    • Ensure equipment is maintained and used to support operational goals.
  • Tests, modifies, and maintains existing instrumentation within defined cost, quality, and time constraints.
  • Demonstrates technical knowledge of Siemens PCS7 PLC systems.
  • Accurately communicates and documents changes to instrumentation layouts.
  • Leads or participates in small-scale instrumentation projects with a hands-on approach.

  • Actively contributes to the achievement of team and organizational goals.

4. Customer Relationship Management

  • Manages expectations of internal customers (e.g., control room operators, supervisors) by delivering reliable and responsive engineering services.
  • Monitors and delivers engineering performance against agreed KPAs/KPIs.
  • Maintains high customer satisfaction through timely and effective electrical and mechanical maintenance.
  • Builds and nurtures cross-functional relationships to share relevant business knowledge and expertise.

5. Stakeholder Engagement and Communication

  • Prioritizes and manages the needs of key stakeholders including supervisors, peers, and learners.
  • Provides expert advice and consultancy support to colleagues and junior team members.
  • Collaborates with other departments such as operations, procurement, and design.
  • Engages with contractors and internal staff to coordinate efforts and resolve challenges efficiently.

Minimum requirements

  • Matric (Grade 12)
  • Diploma/ N6 in Instrumentation Engineering
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Minimum to 4 years' relevant experience.
